NRC Accepts Application for Two New Nuclear Units = in=20 Texas
New 2,700 Megawatt = Nuclear=20 Plant, South Texas Project 3 & 4, Expected to be = Online in=20 2014 and 2015

Company = Release -=20 11/30/2007 07:30

PRINCETON,=20 N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

The = Nuclear=20 Regulatory Commission (NRC) has docketed the Combined=20 Construction and Operating License Application (COLA) = to build=20 and operate two new nuclear units at the South Texas = Project=20 (STP) nuclear power station site filed by NRG Energy, = Inc.=20 (NYSE:NRG), San Antonio'sCPS Energy (CPS) and South = Texas=20 Project Nuclear Operating Company (STPNOC) on = September 24,=20 2007.

The = acceptance=20 review confirms that the application -- the first to = be filed=20 with the NRC in 29 years -- is technically complete = and=20 sufficiently addresses all necessary subject areas. = With the=20 COLA docketed, the NRC begins a comprehensive and = detailed=20 review process that includes requests for additional=20 information, site visits, company responses, public = hearings,=20 NRC Environmental Impact Statements and NRC Safety = Evaluation=20 Reports. Based on this schedule, NRG would anticipate=20 receiving its license approval in time to begin = construction=20 in 2010 and bring STP units 3 and 4 online in 2014 and = 2015,=20 respectively.

"The = clock has=20 officially started. Each day hereafter will bring us = closer to=20 a future of carbon-free, affordable nuclear baseload=20 generation," said David Crane, NRG's President and = Chief=20 Executive Officer. "Nuclear, like no other carbon-free = technology currently in operation, has the power to = move the=20 needle in the fight against global warming."

The = new units=20 will be constructed at the 12,220-acre STP site in = Matagorda=20 County, Texas that is home to STP units 1 and 2. This = site,=20 including its 7,000-acre cooling reservoir, was = originally=20 designed for four units and can easily accommodate the = two new=20 units. The new units will use the U.S. Advanced = Boiling Water=20 Reactor (ABWR) technology which is certified by the = NRC and=20 four units have been built in Japan on time and on = budget and=20 have operated safely and successfully for a = decade.

NRG = filed its=20 letter of intent to submit an application with the NRC = to=20 construct STP units 3 and 4 in June 2006. STPNOC, = together=20 with a team of contractors, prepared the more than = 20,000-page=20 COLA for STP units 3 and 4 in just over one year for = submittal=20 to the NRC.

The=20 multibillion dollar investment is expected to generate = more=20 than $9 billion of economic benefit principally in the = South=20 Texas area, require 4,000 to 6,000 construction = workers, and=20 result in about 800 new operating staff positions at = the=20 plant.
